As part of the 38 WILSON PLATFORM*, Nathalie Parienté was pleased to present the third exhibition dedicated to the work of american artist Ida Applebroog, born in 1929 in the Bronx, one of the most prominent figures of the so-called feminist painting in the United States.

The exhibition Ida Applebroog, l’intime politique, featured a series of works, paintings and drawings by the artist between 1993 and 2007. It has been the opportunity to debate the social political content of Ida Applebroog’s work, through her often intimate representations of the body, and in particular the female body.


Born in 1929 in the Bronx, Ida Applebroog lives and works in New York. In the 60s, settled in California, the artist took an active part in the argumentative movements that rocked the American university environment in the thick of the Vietnam War. Then, fired by the same desire to pursue an artistic work in a spirit of social activism, she contributed to the birth of feminism and participated in the feminist journal «Heresies», with Lucy Lippard.

The 1970s marked the beginning of her recognition. In 1979, Ida Applebroog was selected by Konrad Fisher to take part in the exhibition With a Certain Smile, at Zurich KunsthHalle für Internationale Neue Kunst. Her exhibitions then snowballed all over the world. In 1987, Ida Applebroog participated in La Documenta 8 in Kassel and in 1987, her work entered the collection of New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 1998, The Corcoran Gallery in Washington devoted a major retrospective to the artist.

Among her numerous distinctions, Ida Applebroog was awarded the MacArthur Foundation prize in 1998, along with the American video artist, Gary Hill.
