Henry Wessel : Documentary Style and beyond.

Henry Wessel (1942-2018) was an emblematic artist of the California scene who actively participated in the evolution of photography during the 1970s and whose work is being presented in an exhibition for the first time in Spain.

While photography was still struggling to establish itself as an artistic genre in Europe, newcomers like Wessel, trained in New York in the 1960s, took their work to the MoMA. John Szarkowski, one of the museum’s curators, encouraged young photographers to embark on the path toward a new documentary style, promoting them and opening the doors of the temple of modern art.

Like so many others, Wessel soon emigrated to the West Coast as the centre of gravity of artistic activity worldwide shifted to California in the early 1970s. He arrived at just the right time to participate in all kinds of experimentations favoured by the era, for which photography proved to be a particularly appropriate tool for introspection and deconstruction. The documentary style was highly valued for its direct approach to reality, its sobriety and its general rejection of any artistic effect. Its development in photography created a favourable context for exchanges of all kinds, including those fostered by the most avant-garde movements, such as conceptual art, minimal art or land art.

This exhibition highlights Wessel’s relationship with the art scene of the 1960s and 70s in order to explore the nature of this relationship. It also traces his subsequent evolution, his search for a personal universe influenced by noir fiction and poetry; the links between literature and photography are a major source of inspiration, which Wessel’s work brings to the fore.
